The National Opera organizes an international opera festival every year in May and June, in which symphonic and chamber orchestras from around the world participate. The Romanian Athenaeean Society organizes the George Enescu Festival, a contest whose concerts are held in various parts of the city in September of odd years.
The city center features a mix of medieval, neoclassical and Art nouveau buildings, as well as "neoromenos" from the 1920s and 1930s. In the southern neighborhoods, the utilitarian architecture of the communist era predominates. There are also some more recent contemporaries such as skyscrapers and office buildings.
